Find the cause, then fix the finish

A crack in a fiberglass pool is a symptom. Sometimes it is only cosmetic, a hairline spider crack in the gelcoat from an impact or a stress point. Sometimes it is telling you something about what is underneath: a base that settled, backfill that washed out, or a shell that moved after it was drained. Patch the symptom without reading the cause and the same crack tends to come back.

That is why every repair starts with a proper look. We check where the damage is, how it is shaped, whether the shell is still level, and whether anything around the pool has moved. In Tucson that means thinking about the ground: caliche that holds water against the shell, clay that swells after monsoon rain, and runoff from a storm that found its way under the deck.

We repair fiberglass pools only, including pools installed by other companies. We do not repair concrete or vinyl liner pools. Gelcoat, laminate, fittings and steps are all we work on, and the repair materials we use are made for them.

Why a fiberglass pool is worth repairing

When a fiberglass pool has a problem, replacing it is rarely the answer. Here is why repair usually makes more sense.

The shell is built to last decades

With balanced water and a sound base, a fiberglass shell typically lasts for decades. A localized repair puts a long working life back on track.

Most damage is local

Cracks, blisters and chips are usually confined to a small area. They can be ground out, filled and finished without touching the rest of the shell.

Flex spares the structure

A one-piece shell has a little give, so minor ground movement that can crack a rigid concrete pool more often shows up as cosmetic gelcoat crazing than as a structural failure.

No replaster afterward

A repaired concrete pool often ends in new plaster across the whole surface. A fiberglass repair is blended into the gelcoat around it, and the rest of the finish stays as it is.

What we repair

Cracks and spider cracks

Hairline spider cracks in the gelcoat, stress cracks at steps and corners, and deeper cracks that reach the laminate, each repaired to the depth the damage goes.

Blisters, chips and gelcoat damage

Osmotic blisters, chips from dropped objects, and worn spots repaired and color matched as closely as the existing gelcoat allows.

Leaks, fittings and steps

Leaks at returns, skimmers, lights and main drains, loose or cracked fittings, and steps or benches that have cracked or sat low.

What a repair includes

Inspection and diagnosis

A close look at the damage and the shell around it, a level check, and leak detection where water loss is the complaint. We tell you what we found and what caused it.

A plan for the water

Many repairs can be done with the water in or lowered a little. Where the area has to be dry, we lower the water to a plan that accounts for groundwater and the shell, and we never fully drain a fiberglass pool without one.

The repair itself

Damage ground out to sound material, laminate rebuilt where needed, filled, faired and finished in gelcoat or a repair compound made for fiberglass, then cured properly before water goes back.

Refill and rebalance

The pool refilled where it was lowered, the water balanced so the new repair cures and lasts, and the equipment checked before we leave.

How a repair runs

  1. Photos and a call

Send us photos of the damage and tell us how long it has been there and whether you are losing water. Many problems can be triaged from good photos.

  2. On-site inspection

We look at the damage, check the shell for level, look at the deck and drainage around it, and run leak detection if needed.

  3. Written repair plan

You get a written plan: what is wrong, what we think caused it, how we will repair it, and whether the water needs to come down.

  4. Prepare the area

If the water has to be lowered, we lower it only as far as needed and keep an eye on the shell. The damaged area is ground back and dried.

  5. Repair and cure

Laminate rebuilt if needed, filled, finished and given the time it needs to cure in our heat before water returns.

  6. Refill, balance and check

The pool goes back to full, the water is balanced, and we come back to check the repair once it has been in service.

Why have us repair your pool

We only work on fiberglass. Grinding, laminating and gelcoat finishing are specialist work, and they are what we do every week, not something we fit in between plaster jobs.

We look for the cause. A crack that came from settlement or a washed-out base will come back if only the surface is patched. We tell you what we see underneath, even when the answer is less convenient.

And we treat the water with respect. Fiberglass pools can lift or shift when emptied, so we lower water only when the repair needs it, only as far as it needs, and always to a plan.

Spotted a crack or losing water?

Send us a few photos of the damage and a shot of the whole pool. We will tell you what we think it is and how soon we can get out.

Fiberglass pool repair questions

Can a fiberglass pool be repaired?

Yes. Spider cracks, structural cracks, blisters, chips, leaking fittings and damaged steps can all be repaired. The repair is ground out, rebuilt and finished in material made for fiberglass. Color matching an older, sun faded shell is not always exact, so we talk through what the finished repair will look like before we start.

How much does it cost to repair a fiberglass pool?

It depends on what is wrong and why. A cosmetic spider crack is a small job. A crack that reaches the laminate, a leak behind a fitting, or damage that needs the water lowered takes more time and material. We give you a written price after we have seen it.

Do fiberglass pools crack easily?

Not usually. The shell is designed to flex a little with the ground. When cracks do show up they usually trace back to an impact, a poor base, washed-out backfill, or a pool that was drained without a plan.

How to repair a fiberglass pool underwater?

Small chips and fitting leaks can sometimes be patched underwater with compounds made to cure wet, and that is a reasonable stopgap. A lasting gelcoat or crack repair generally needs the area dry so it can be ground out, filled and cured properly, which means lowering the water to a plan.

What's the life expectancy of a fiberglass pool?

With a quality shell, a proper install and balanced water, a fiberglass pool typically lasts for decades. Timely repairs are part of that. Small cracks and blisters dealt with early stay small.

Will my pool pop out of the ground if I drain it?

It can. Never fully drain a fiberglass pool without a professional. The water is what holds the shell down against groundwater and soil pressure. Empty it, and that hydrostatic pressure can lift or shift the shell and crack it. When a repair needs the water down, we lower it only as far as needed and refill promptly.
