A small pool, done properly

Not every yard needs a forty foot pool, and not every owner wants one. A lot of Tucson homes have a walled courtyard, a narrow side yard or a back patio that would hold a family pool only by giving up everything else. A plunge pool fits the space you have and still gets you in the water every evening from May to October.

A fiberglass plunge pool is a short, compact shell, usually with a molded bench, a set of steps and enough depth to stand and cool off. Some owners want a place to soak and talk at the end of the day. Some want cold water for recovery after a run, or warm water for sore joints. Plenty want a pool the grandkids can use without the upkeep of a big one.

Small does not mean simple. The shell still needs a level, compacted base, plumbing that is pressure tested, and backfill placed as it fills. Courtyard and patio home lots are often the hardest to reach, with block walls on every side and a roofline in the way, so the crane plan matters more on a small pool than a big one. We look at all of it at the estimate.

Why a fiberglass plunge pool suits Tucson

A small pool gets used hard and looked after lightly. Fiberglass is the material that handles both.

Less water to fill and top off

A plunge pool holds a fraction of the water of a family pool, so there is far less to fill, treat and replace as it evaporates in the dry air. Add a cover and the losses drop further.

Easy to keep clean in a small space

Small pools heat up fast in summer, which algae likes. Smooth gelcoat gives it little to grip, so most owners brush less and use fewer chemicals than they would in a plaster plunge pool.

Comfortable for long sits

A plunge pool is mostly for sitting, not laps. Molded benches and steps in gelcoat are smooth on legs and swimsuits, so an hour on the bench does not leave you scraped.

In the ground quickly

The shell arrives finished. Once permits clear, a plunge pool install is typically a short project, which matters when the yard is also your only outdoor living space.

What we install

Courtyard and patio home plunge pools

Compact shells for walled courtyards and the small yards common in Rita Ranch, Sahuarita and central Tucson, set so you keep room for a table and shade.

Heated soaking pools

Plunge pools with a heater or heat pump so they work as a warm soak in the winter and a cool dip in the summer. A popular choice in Green Valley and SaddleBrooke.

Plunge pools with features

Bench jets, a bubbler, a small sheer descent off a wall or color lighting. A small pool is a good place to spend on one or two features you will actually see every night.

What is included

Fit and access check

We measure the yard, setbacks from walls and the house, and the route in from the street. On tight lots we plan the crane position before you choose a shell.

Permit, HOA and barrier plan

A plunge pool still needs a building permit from your jurisdiction and, in most communities, HOA review. We also plan the barrier with you, since the rules apply to small pools too.

Dig, base and set

Excavation sized to the shell, including any caliche, a laser leveled and compacted gravel base, and the shell set and checked level in every direction.

Equipment, deck and start-up

A pump and filter sized for a small volume, an optional heater, coping and decking to fit the space, then inspection, fill and water balanced for the gelcoat.

How a plunge pool install runs

  1. Free on-site estimate

We walk the yard, measure, look at the access from the street and talk through how you want to use the pool: cooling off, soaking, or both.

  2. Shell, layout and written quote

You choose the shell and options, we mark the outline on the ground, and you get an itemized quote with excavation, base, equipment and decking listed separately.

  3. Permit and HOA approval

We submit to your jurisdiction and HOA and order the shell. On most plunge pool projects this paperwork is the longest wait.

  4. Dig and base

Blue stake locates, excavation, caliche removal where needed, and a compacted, laser leveled base.

  5. Set, plumbing and backfill

The shell goes in by crane, is leveled and plumbed, then backfilled in stages while it fills with water.

  6. Deck, equipment and start-up

Coping and decking, the equipment pad, final inspection, then fill, start-up and a walkthrough of how everything runs.

Why build your plunge pool with us

We give a small pool the same care as a big one. The base, the level and the backfill decide whether a bench sits flat for twenty years, whatever the size of the shell around it.

We are honest about fit. If a plunge pool would feel cramped for what you want to do, we will say so, and if a slightly bigger shell would fit with a different crane position, we will show you. If your space suits a spa better than a pool, we will tell you that too.

And we stay on afterward. Small pools swing in temperature and chemistry faster than big ones, so having the team that installed it also service it makes a real difference.

Wondering if a plunge pool fits your yard?

Send us a photo of the space and the way in from the street. We will measure it, check the crane path and tell you honestly what will fit.

Plunge pool questions

Is a 12x24 pool considered small?

Yes, 12 by 24 feet is usually thought of as a small pool, and it sits right between a plunge pool and a family pool. It is big enough to swim a few strokes and float, and still fits most compact Tucson yards. True plunge pools are shorter still.

What are the typical sizes of fibreglass pools?

Shells range from small plunge pools around 10 to 16 feet long up to family pools around 40 feet long. Width usually tops out around 16 feet, because shells travel by highway. Plunge pools sit at the small end, which makes them easier to deliver to tight lots.

How much does a 10x10 inground pool cost?

A small shell costs less than a large one, but a lot of the price of any inground pool is fixed: the permit, excavation, crane, plumbing, equipment and decking. That means a plunge pool usually costs less than a family pool, but not in proportion to its size. Access matters too, since a crane reaching over a house into a walled courtyard takes more planning than an open yard. We give an itemized quote after a free visit.

What is the cheapest pool shape?

Simple rectangles and plain shapes with fewer features are generally the least expensive. With fiberglass the shape matters less to price than it does with concrete, because every shell comes from a finished mold. Size, access and the extras you add usually move the price more.

What is the downside of a fiberglass pool?

Shapes come from manufacturer molds, width is limited by shipping, and the shell has to reach the yard by crane or a clear path. On a plunge pool the access question matters most, so we check it at the estimate. Deep diving wells are generally not available, which is rarely a concern on a small pool.

How long do fiberglass pools last?

With a quality shell, a proper install and balanced water, a fiberglass pool typically lasts for decades. There is no replaster cycle. On a small pool, keeping the water balanced matters even more, because chemistry shifts faster in a smaller volume.
